(课件网) UNIT 4 ADVERSITY AND COURAGE Using Language Learn how to handle challenges 1 Shackleton and a team tried to sail to another island to find help. Look at the picture below and discuss the challenges you think they faced. Learn how to handle challenges (码上听) Looking at the landscape in the picture I think Shackleton and his team would have faced many cha-llenges. First of all,it was very cold and there was snow and ice every-where. The area is also very mount-ainous,so they would have had to climb with their essentials. It would also be hard to know where they were going as the place is very large and all looks the same. On top of the physical challenges, they would have had great mental challenges facing those conditions and not knowing what to expect and whether they would succeed. Suggested answer The team consisted of _____ members. They sailed on rough seas for days before they landed on the _____ side of South Georgia Island. Later they climbed over the mountains _____ the whaling station. Later, Shackleton arranged for a rescue boat to return to _____ island. LuckiIy, everyone was _____ . 2. Listen to one of the team members talk about the rescue plan and their journey. Complete the summary. six wrong arrived at Elephant still alive 听力文本 We had stayed on Elephant Island for only a day,but Shackleton was already worried. However,to my surprise,Shackleton also picked the most difficult and unfriendly member to join us on the trip. I later learnt that he did this because he wanted the group remaining on the island to stay cheerful and positive until we returned. We sailed on very rough seas for days. The sea was so strong that it was almost impossible for me to check our position. I was only able to use my instruments three times during the trip. It scared me to think that we might sail past South Georgia Island. This would mean that we might sail into the open sea and there would be no rescue! Unfortunately,we did sail off-course for a while, meaning we landed on the wrong side of South Georgia Island. We had to climb over the mountains to get help. The mountains looked so steep that I thought we might have to slide down them on our bottoms! When we arrived at the whaling station,Shackleton immediately arranged for a rescue boat to return to Elephant Island. However, due to the rough seas,we could not get near to the island. Shackleton became worried about the men. He was very anxious and began to look extremely old. We tried for three months to rescue the 22 men. Finally,we were able to reach Elephant Island and luckily find everyone still alive! Th ... ...
