Facts about World Languages: 1. Approximately 7,000 languages are currently spoken in the world. 2. About 5% of the world languages are spoken by 95% of the population of the world. 3. A quarter of the world’s languages are spoken by fewer than a thousand people.(There are about 500 languages which are spoken by fewer than 100 people, and about 175 which are spoken by fewer than 10 people.) 4. 850 languages are spoken in India. 5. There are more people who speak English in China than in the USA. 6. In most languages, 100 words make up half of all words used in conversation. 7. More than 2,400 different languages are spoken on the continent of Africa. 8. Somalia is the only African country in which the entire population speaks the same language, Somali.
