Nowadays, there are more than 500 Dai embroidery artists in Yuxi, a central city in Yunnan that is home to the Dai people. Seeing a group of wild Asian elephants wandering(游荡) from a place to another in Yunnan, the artists came up with the idea of creating embroidery pieces about the elephant family that arrived in Yuxi in April and wandered around the area for quite a long time. Since leaving their forest home in Xishuangbanna in March, 2020, the elephants have traveled over 500 kilometers. They walked northwards through forests, villages and even highways, without any clear sign of where they would go. Their unusual journey has won them fauns from all over the world, including the Dai embroidery artists. One of the artists’ embroidery pieces, called Where are the elephants , shows the elephants’ Journey across Yuxi. The ancient skills of the Dai people are shown in this work. For example, several thumb-sized shoes connect three locations on the elephants’ trip. Besides, the artists used Dai Jin to make the three elephants on the embroidery piece.
