Applying the traditional aesthetics (美学) of ink-wash painting, ink-wash animation represented a great artistic breakthrough for Chinese animation, but very few such films were ever made due to the resources required. From 1961 to 1988, Shanghai Animation Film Studio produced four ink-wash films. The first, Tadpoles Looking For Their Mother, whimsically (异想天开地) depicts (描述) tadpoles meeting different animals while searching for their mother. The last, Feeling from Mountain and Water, is a lyrical (抒情诗调的) masterpiece about an elderly musician and his disciple. Based on a tale from a Dunhuang Caves painting, A Deer of Nine Colors is animated in the style of ancient Buddhist paintings. ink wash animation film n.动画片 Before you listen, look at the following pictures and discuss the questions in groups. I have seen this animation before. It has no words but is guided by the music. It is like an ink wash painting coming to life. The next picture is from Tadpoles Searching for Mother. It was the first ink wash animation film and was influenced by the work of painter Qi Baishi. The last picture is from Feeling from Mountain and Water. Chinese cartoon films combine Chinese ancient painting, Dunhuang murals, murals in the Yongle Palace and colorful folk arts, like shadow play, paper-cut, and paper-cut for window decoration, and have developed cartoon film types like puppetoons (木偶片), ink-and-wash films and paper-cut films unique to China. Therefore, Chinese cartoon films are unique to China not only in content but also in form. In 1960, ink-and-wash animated films appeared in China and caught the attention of the world as a breakthrough in the forms of expression and aesthetic conception in animated films. Children’s films in this period employ colorful means of expression. The special effects in the science fiction and fairy-tale films unfold a brand new world for children. Tadpoles Searching for Mother received the Best Animated Film Prize at the 1st Hundred Flower Awards and five international prizes.
