Module: Changes Unit: Now and then Task 3 When my grandparents were young Task description In pairs, pupils brainstorm questions and list questions to ask their grandparents about their lives when they were young. Pupils then interview their grandparents. They bring in some photos of their grandparents and share what they learnt from the interview. Practise the language needed for the task and demonstrate the steps by using the pictures at each step of the task. Part A Pupils get into pairs. They think of questions to ask their grandparents about their lives when they were young. Part B They write questions to ask their grandparents about their lives when they were young on the Copymaster. Part C They ask their grandparents the questions and note down their answers on a piece of paper. They write out the answers on the Copymaster after the interview. Tell pupils that they can interview their grandparents in Chinese but they have to write their notes in English. Part D They bring in some old photos of their grandparents to class. In class, pupils get back into pairs. They show their partner the photos and tell him/her what they found out about their grandparents’ lives when they were young. More able pupils could describe the photos of their grandparents to their partner. Work with your partner. Think of questions to ask your grandparents about life when they were young. Example ( We can ask: ‘Was there any cola when you were young ’ ) ( Yes. We can also ask: ‘Did you use credit cards when you were young ’ ) Write the questions on the Copymaster. Example ( 1 Q: Was there any cola when you were young A: 2 Q: Did you use credit cards when you were young A: ) Ask your grandparents the questions and note down their answers. Then write out their answers on the Copymaster. Can you bring in some of your grandparents’ old photos Show your partner the photos. Tell him / her what you found out about your grandparents’ lives when they were young. Example ( There was cola when my grandparents were young. They didn’t use credit cards.
