Matching game (A cup of tea) Aim: To reinforce the correct use of phrases of quantity, e.g. a cup of tea Description of the game: Pupils match the picture cards of containers and the word cards of food items and make sentences. You will need: Enough copies of the picture cards (containers) and the word cards (food) for each group of 3–4 pupils in the class Steps: 1. Revise the vocabulary in Chapters 5 and 6 with pupils before the game. 2. Divide the class into small groups of 3–4 pupils. Give each group a set of the picture cards and the word cards. 3. Ask pupils to cut out the picture cards and the word cards. Remind them to use their scissors carefully. 4. Pupils place the two sets of cards in separate piles face down on the desk. 5. Pupils take turns to turn over one card from each set. 6. If the container on the picture card and the food on the word card match, e.g. ‘a cup’ and ‘tea’, pupils should make a sentence using their cards, e.g. I’d like a cup of tea. 7. Pupils can keep the cards if they make a correct sentence. They have to put the cards back if the sentence is incorrect. 8. Continue the game until there are no cards left. The pupil with the most cards at the end of the game wins. 9. You can add more pictures and words on the blank cards if necessary.
