Class game (Present continuous tense) Aim: To reinforce the correct use of the present continuous tense Description of the game: Pupils look at some picture and word cards and make sentences using the present continuous tense. You will need: A set of the picture and word cards A copy of the worksheet for each group of 4 to 8 pupils in the class Some adhesive tape / Blu-Tack for sticking the cards on the board Steps: 1. Cut out the picture and word cards. Keep them in pairs as they are already arranged, e.g. hippo and swim, birds and fly. 2. Revise the vocabulary in LWTE 1B Chapters 3 and 4 with the class before the game. 3. Divide the class into small groups of 4–8 pupils. Give each group a copy of the worksheet. 4. Choose a pair of picture and word cards. Stick the cards on the board. 5. The first pupil in each group writes a sentence on the worksheet that combines the name of the animal(s) on the picture card and the words on the word card using the present continuous tense, e.g. The hippo is swimming. Ask the pupils to put up their hands when they have finished. 6. Ask the pupils to come out and write the sentences on the board to check whether they are correct or not. 7. The group that finishes first with the correct sentence gets one point. 8. Continue putting the picture and word cards on the board until all the pupils have written at least one sentence. 9. The group with the most points at the end of the game wins. Answers: The hippo is swimming. The birds are flying. Joe is running. The dogs are fighting. May is eating. The monkeys are climbing. The zebra is sleeping. The rabbits are hopping.
