Learning objectives By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: understand the story by getting the plot and some detailed information; 2. know some basic information about O. Henry and appreciate the surprising ending; 3. think creatively and come up with their own ending of the story; 4. have a better understanding of honesty and responsibility. II. Predicted area of difficulty Think creatively and come up with their own ending of the story. IV. Teaching procedures Step 1 Warming up T asks Ss to brainstorm some important moral values. Courage, responsibility, loyalty, gratitude, honesty, perseverance, compassion… T asks Ss to read the list below and have a self-check. tell the truth and say what you really think; play by the rules and do not try to take unfair advantage of others; keep promises and do not make promises you cannot keep; are prepared to admit mistake; take agreements seriously; correct mistakes rather than blaming others; think about how your actions will affect others; do everything to the best of your ability. T guides Ss to answer the following questions. What other descriptions of honesty and responsibility can you add What do you think is the relationship between honesty and responsibility according to the descriptions 【设计意图:教师引导学生头脑风暴,说出一些重要的道德价值观,引出“诚实”和“责任”两个核心道德价值观。接着教师让学生阅读关于这两个价值观的描述并做一个自查,让学生关注并反省自身的道德修养。最后,让学生对“诚实”和“责任”的描述加以补充,并探讨二者的关系,加深对此话题的认知。】 Step 2 Introducing the author 1. T asks Ss to answer the following questions: (1) Who wrote the short story O. Henry (2) What do you know about him O.Henry is a world-famous American short story writer, whose works include The last leaf, The gift of the Magi, The Cop and the Anthem, etc. In his stories, he often focused on the everyday life of ordinary people in New York City at that time. His stories are best known for their surprise endings. 【设计意图:通过对作者及其作品的回顾和介绍,激活并补充阅读背景知识,突出欧·亨利短篇故事的特点,激起学生的阅读兴趣。】 Step 3 Understanding the story T asks Ss to find the setting and characters by reading quickly. Setting: On a dark night & outside a shop, New York Characters: Jimmy, Bob & a plain clothes man T guides Ss to figure out the plot of the story and complete the diagram in A1. Introduction: Jimmy went to see his friend Bob at an agreed location. Rising action: Bob noticed that Jimmy was different. Climax: Bob realized that the man was not his best friend, Jimmy Wells. Falling action: The man arrested Bob. Resolution: (4) Bob received a note from Jimmy Wells that explained his actions. T asks Ss to answer the questions in A2 to get some specific information ... ...
