This fairy tale is adapted from The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde. He was one of London's most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. Language points 1.Once upon a time,there was a large,lovely garden. once upon a time“从前,很久以前”, 也可以说:long ago/long,long ago 或者a long time ago 2.How happy they were! 本句为感叹句, 其构成为:How+形容词/副词+主语+谓语! 3.“What are you doing here ”the giant cried in a loud voice. in a loud voice=in a high voice“大声地” in a low voicev“低声地” 4.They ran away and dared not come back. ◆run away“逃跑,走掉,逃脱”。 ◆dare在这里作情态动词,通常用于疑问句或否定句中。dare not意为“不敢”,后接动词原形。在肯定句中常用其实义动词的用法,后常接动词不定式。 5.The children were frightened. frightened adj.“害怕的”,与afraid同义,常用来修饰人。 frightening adj.“令人害怕的,吓人的,可怕的”,常用来修饰物。 6.The poor children no longer had a place to play. no longer=not…any longer “不再”,常用来修饰延续性动词,位于be动词、情态动词或助动词之后,实义动词之前 no more=not …any more也可表示“不再”,指做事的次数或事物在数量上不再增加,一般与非延续性动词连用。 7.The green grass was covered with snow,and the cold winds kept the birds away. ◆grass在本句中意为“草地”。 ◆be covered with…意为“被……覆盖”,其主动形式为cover…with…,意为“用……覆盖……”。 ◆keep away意为“(使)离开(或不靠近)”。 This fairy tale is adapted(改编) from The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde.
