Lesson 45 The boss's letter 老板的信 [词汇]（6） can modal verb 能够 boss n. 老板，上司 minute n. 分（钟） ask v.请求，要求 handwriting n. 书写 terrible adj. 糟糕的，可怕的 ★can [k n] modal verb 能够 [ m dl] = may ★boss [b s] n. 老板，上司 = head boss + y = bossy(adj.) 爱发号施令的，专横的 ★minute ['m n t] n. 分（钟） eg. wait for a minute 请等一会儿 minute hand 分针 秒：second 小时：hour ★ask [ɑ:sk] v.请求，要求 1、问 ask sb. sth. 问某人… eg. ask him the way 向他问路 Can I ask you a question 我能问你一个问题吗？ 2、要求，请求 ask sb. to do sth. 要求某人做某事 ask sb. not to do s th. 要求某人不要做某事 ask for sth. 请求、要求某样东西 eg. You asked for it. 你自找的（自讨苦吃）。 ★handwriting [ h ndra t ] n. 书写，书法 hand 手 writing 笔迹，写（也可作write的现在分词） handwriting是抽象名词，只有单数形式。（抽象名词是性质、状态、动作、概念等的名称，如time时间、hope希望、friendship友谊、knowledge知识等） ★terrible adj. 可怕的，糟糕的 (可以指心情、天气、相貌、味道等) eg. What terrible weather! 天气真糟糕啊！ The Japanese food is terrible! 日本食物很难吃。 She is terrible at cooking. 她烹饪很糟糕。 （be terrible at = be bad at 不擅长…） terribly adv. 很糟糕 = very badly eg. I am terribly sorry. 我很抱歉。 You are the person I’m looking for. 你是我要找的人。 You are the very person I’m looking for. 你就是我要找的人。 （very 加在名词前面不解释“非常”，而表示强调）。 [课文] THE BOSS: Can you come here a minute please, Bob 请你过来一下好吗，鲍勃？ a minute = one minute 一分钟，一会儿（虚指） a minute 一会儿，在这里不能译成“一分钟”,在句中作状语。相当于：Can you come here for a while please, Bob Can you come here for a moment please, Bob BOB: Yes, sir 什么事，先生？ THE BOSS: Where's Pamela 帕梅拉在哪儿？ BOB: She's next door. 她在隔壁。 next door 隔壁（起副词作用，作表语。） eg. next one 下一个 = next (n.) 下一个，下一位 next page 下一页 the next day 第二天 next [nekst] adj. 紧邻的，贴近的 eg. He rose to fetch a chair from the next room. 他立起身来去隔壁房间搬来一张椅子。 adj. 紧接在后的；接下去的；下一班的 eg. Is he coming this weekend or next weekend？ 他这个周末来还是下个周末来？ adv. 接下去，然后 eg. What happened next 然后发生了什么事情？ She's in her office, sir. 在她的办公室里，先生。 OL = office lady 白领丽人 SOHO 可译:Small Office and Home Office 小型家居办公室 或译:Super Office and Human Office 超级办公室、人性化办公室 （SOHO是一种新经济、新概念，指自由、弹性而新型的生活和工作方式。SOHO专指能够按照自己的兴趣和爱好自由选择工作，不受时间和地点制约、不受发展空间限制的白领一族。） THE BOSS: Can she type this letter for me 她能为我打一下这封信吗？ 介词for：为，给，替 eg. I do everything for you. 我做任何事情都是为了你。 Ask her please. 请问问她。 BOB: Yes, sir. 好的，先生。 Can you type this letter for the boss please, Pamela 请你把这封信给老板打一下可以吗，帕梅拉？ PAMELA: Yes, of course I can. 可以，当然可以。 BOB: Here you are. 给你这信。 PAMELA: Thank you, Bob.
