They were expecting a valuable parcel of diamonds from South Africa. A few hours earlier, someone had told the police that thieves would try to steal the diamonds. When the plane arrived, some of the detectives were waiting inside the main building while others were waiting on the airfield. Two men took the parcel off the plane and carried it into the Customs House. While two detectives were keeping guard at the door, two others opened the parcel. To their surprise, the precious parcel was full of stones and sand! A few hours earlier, someone had told the police that thieves would try to steal the diamonds. 数小时以前，有人向警方报告，说有人企图偷走这些钻石。 a few hours earlier 数小时以前，是时间状语。后面的这个句子是一个宾语从句，the police和thieves would try to steal the diamonds都是作谓语动词told的宾语。如下面的句子，也是一个双宾语形式的宾语从句： My dad told me that he would be back on Sunday. 我爸爸告诉我他星期日回来。 3. When the plane arrived, some of the detectives were waiting inside the main building, while others were waiting on the airfield. 当飞机到达时，一些侦探等候在主楼内，另一些侦探则守候在停机坪上。 全句是一个由when引导的时间状语从句，when引导的部分为从句，some of the…这个句子是主句。这个主句部分里又包含了一个由while引导的时间状语从句，while引导的时间状语从句，其动作通常是与主句动作同时进行的。如： Mother was cooking the meal while I was doing my homework. 当妈妈在做饭的时候，我正在做作业。 some…others……表示一些人……，另外一些人……。如： Some of the st ... ...
