It is about 20 kilometers away from the downtown. It covers a total area of over 290 hectares. Until in the Qing Dynasty, the garden got the name of Garden of Clear Ripples. In 1888. Empress Dowager Cixi, the practical ruler of the Qing at that time, pinched the navy fund to rebuild the garden which was plundered and destroyed by Anglo-French Allied Forces in 1860, and changed its name into the Summer Palace.
