Have students read the web page on page 29 and answer the following question. What examples of important milestones in the development of the Internet are mentioned The first email, webcam and emojis. The first email was sent in 1971 by Ray Tomlinson. It was a test message to himself. He wanted to see whether he could send a message from one computer to another. He chose the “@” sign to separate the username from the name of 批 注 his machine. The first webcam was created by computer scientists at the University of Cambridge in 1991. What did it film A coffee pot outside the office. These scientists used the webcam to see from their desks whether the pot was empty to avoid wasted trips for coffee. Emojis, small digital images used to express ideas or feelings in electronic communication, were created in 1999 in Japan. The creator was inspired by Japanese comics, street signs and Chinese characters. Soon emojis took off throughout the world. Oxford Dictionaries selected,the “Face with Tears of Joy” emoji, as the Word of the Year 2015. 3. Have students answer the two questions on page 29. 1) Which of the above inventions do you use most frequently Why I use emojis most frequently when I message my friends. They look cute, and are a quick and easy way to express how I am feeling. 2) What other facts do you know about the Internet The term “surfing the Internet” was first popularized in print by Jean Armour Polly, a librarian, in 1992.
