Create a situation: Let’s open the memory book of 2020 and recall. There was a pandemic outbreak at that time. When you heard the news, what were you doing What were people in the picture doing Let students look at the pictures and make sentences. Step 2 Presentation(Identify the tense) Observe the four sentences and find out the sentence structure of past progressive tense. Then conclude the meaning of it. We/You/They + were V-ing I/He/She/It + was V-ing Review the rules of changing verbs from their base forms into the “ing”forms. Then, ask students to put these verbs: play, take, have, run, shop, sleep, swim, write in three different plete the sentences in Grammar Focus. Step 3 Understand the tense When the pandemic happened, what were your parents doing First, look at the pictures and make sentences. Then, let students use a “magic word—when” to combine two related sentences. After that, let students find out the sentence structure of past progressive tense with when-clause. Then, let students use a “magic word—while” to combine two related sentences. After that, let students find out the sentence structure of past progressive tense with while-clause.
