As a teenager, Ceesay was forced to drop out of school because of poverty. She used a woven basket to carry some goods to sell in the market to support herself. When the basket broke, she took a plastic bag and started using it. She liked it because the plastic bag was strong and light. Other people in the Gambia thought the same and saw the same advantages of plastic bags. Then plastic bags became popular in the Gambia. The problem was that people did not reuse the bags and simply threw them behind their homes. She kept learning about the surrounding environment and planned to take action to change it. In 1997, she started a recycling movement called One Plastic Bag in the Gambia. She educated women in the Gambia to recycle plastic waste.
