综合检测 [分值:40分] Ⅰ.阅读理解(共4小题;每小题2.5分,共10分) A language is basically a collection of dialects that are understandable to each other.Although there are a few references to languages in some books, researchers are still confused as to how and when they were invented.According to the story from Genesis, humans are united after the Great Flood and begin speaking a single language.Moving from the east to the land of Shinar, they agree to build a city and tower.Upon seeing this, the Creator upsets their speech so that they can no longer understand each other, and scatters(使分散) them around the world. According to Ethnologue:Languages of the World, there are about 7,000 known languages spoken by people around the world. In Asia alone, there are 2,294 languages spoken,in Africa 2,144,in the Americas 1,061,and in Europe 287 languages.Sadly, these numbers fall every year.Actually, the exact number of languages spoken has always been surrounded by uncertainty. This is partly due to the fact that there are still many parts of the world that have not been fully explored yet. Why does a language become endangered easily?“It happens when fewer and fewer people speak it,and especially when children stop learning it as their main language. These children are then less likely to speak it at home and teach it to their children,” said Gabriela Perez Baez,an associate professor of Linguistics in the Linguistics Department at the University of Oregon. An example of this can be seen in North America.Among 165 native languages, only eight of them are spoken by 10,000 people and about 75 are spoken by a small number of old people. Based on the current situation, linguists are now able to predict that at least 3,000 languages will be lost within the next century. That’s about half of today’s known languages. So we should make an effort to help save dying languages, other than the forceful measures that the governments have taken. 1.How does the author explain the origin of languages A.By using a poem. B.By making a comparison. C.By giving an example. D.By telling an ancient tale. 2.What can we know about languages from paragraph 2 A.Half of them are spoken in Asia. B.Some of them can still be unknown. C.The types of them in Africa are the most. D.The number of European languages falls fastest. 3.What can cause a language to disappear according to Gabriela Perez Baez A.A small reduction in populations. B.The increase in aging populations. C.An end to teaching young generations. D.The poor communication between people. 4.What’s the author’s attitude towards the future of languages A.Positive. B.Unclear. C.Uncaring. D.Concerned.
