Learning objectives Get ready for writing What is an invitation letter Invitation: a written or spoken request to come somewhere or do something An invitation letter: a written message that requests a person, group of people, or a company to be present at a certain event. It may be formal or informal. Discuss the questions with your partner. 1. What type of information will you include in your invitation email 2. What language style will you use in your email, formal or informal 1 Purpose, time, place, background, rules, expectations, special instructions, greetings… Formal. 2 Read the email to Mr Jenson from Zhao Zheng, President of the Student Union. Dear Mr Jenson, I am writing on behalf of the school’s Student Union. As you may know, we are running a school-wide public speaking competition, and the final will take place at the lecture hall on 10 May (9 am-12 pm). I am writing to ask whether you would be willing to help us judge the final competition. Since March, we have already had two rounds of the competition, with more than 100 students. Now we have 12 students left for the final. The topic of the final speech is"Education for Innovation". Students have to give a five-minute speech on the topic in English. Read for writing During the final round, as a judge, you would be responsible for listening to all the speeches, noting down any positive or negative aspects for each petitors should be judged on their pronunciation, clarity and fluency, and also progression of ideas and audience engagement Then you will discuss your notes with three other judges, and come to a decision about who comes first, second and third.
