Industry along the coast pollutes its waters; illegal fishing is reducing the number of fish; climate change caused by human activities leads to rising temperatures, which bleach /bli:t / the coral. The reef became a UNESCO World Heritage Site and today is carefully monitored. Areas of the reef where living things reproduce(生物繁殖) are now protected, and measures are being taken to stop tourists and fishing boats damaging the reef further. The islands around the reef are also protected from fire and pests. Through actions such as these, it is hoped that the Great Barrier Reef will be conserved for future generations.
