Step 1 Speaking CP52 T Get Ss to review the “Tip” before making dialogues. T: Here’s a short dialogue. What do you suppose B thinks of A A: May I take the seat next to you B: Must you T: B expresses his/her attitude in the rhetorical tone with a question. You can see B dislike A’s sitting beside him/her. So if A sat next to B, B would be unhappy. T: Another example for you. What did Jane want to express “Haven’t we met before ” asked Jane. T: Jane expressed herself in the form of a negative question. As a matter of fact, it was a strong affirmation. Jane wants the other person to agree that they did meet somewhere. She stressed that she they had met each other before! T: From the above two examples, we can see the importance of tone and stress in communication. T: Supposing that you’ll make a time capsule, which would you put in and why What would you like to tell the people in the future What hopes and wishes do you have for the future T: Before you make dialogues with your desk-mates, please review the tip at CP52. T: So you know your tone and stress on certain words help express your ideas and emotions better. Do apply them properly. Sample answers: A: Let’s begin our letter with a description of the world now to help the people in 2050 understand how we live. For example, we’re currently living in an exciting time full of amazing scientific and technological discoveries. B: Yes!We can mention some important technologies that affect our lives greatly, like the Internet and artificial intelligence. Without them, the smartphone we use today wouldn’t be possible. A: Good idea!We could put my old smartphone in the capsule for them to see what it looks like and tell them more about it in the letter. B: They’ll be impressed for sure! Smartphones allow us to do many things from anywhere and at any time: video calling, surfing the Internet, shopping online, and finding our ways with virtual directions. A: Exactly! I think they’ll be interested to know how smartphones make our lives more convenient and also how advanced they are in our time, especially as a relatively new invention. I wonder if people of the future will still be using smartphones. What do you think B: Perhaps. Maybe they’ll use some type of smart implant technology. That would be amazing! A: It would be.
