My wife and I lived in central Africa, working as animal doctors to save mountain gorillas(大猩猩) there. One morning, we were told to help an injured young gorilla in the forest. Along with a few guides, who helped us carry our supplies, we started to get into the rainforest. After a difficult journey, we saw a group of gorillas resting and sitting in the trees, unaware of our presence. We stood quietly, observing the group to find the injured gorilla. Soon, I spotted our patient; there was a thin piece of metal closely around the gorilla's hand. The metal, which was probably left by hunters to catch animals, had hurt the gorilla’ s hand. And blood was flowing out of the wound. We quietly discussed our action plan. Then I prepared the tranquilizer(镇静剂) gun and stood ready. I had to watch for the right moment when I could be sure to hit the little gorilla. Suddenly, the youngster showed himself, following his mother, and I fired. The dart(飞镖) hit him, causing him to shout, but it fell out as he climbed onto his mother's back. Luckily, he had taken in enough of the tranquilizer. Seconds later, he fell slowly off and lay on the ground, sleepy. The adults of the group came over to check his strange behavior. They stood around him, looking at him in a confused way. Why was he so sleepy One by one, they came forward to touch him. We watched from a distance as the little gorilla, still trying to move, rolled down the slope toward us. I immediately threw a cloth over him to hide him from sight. I knew the fact that gorillas would lose interest in an object if they couldn't see it. And indeed, the adult gorillas, including the young gorilla's mother, who had been curious just seconds before, left and sat up in trees in the distance again. We had to act quickly to first remove the metal and next deal with the wound. Then, our work would be over. I quickly opened my first aid box. It started raining, and we left, staying under trees to watch the little gorilla wake. ...
