Read the titles of the two texts and guess what the texts will be about. Criminal Found After 31 Years Copernicus’ Grave Found 1. How is DNA usually used To identify genetic information To detect disease Read the introductory paragraph and answer the questions. Figure out a person’s identity Learn how people are related 2. What does technology let us use DNA for 1. What were the difficulties faced in each of the two cases 2. What have DNA detectives helped to find The target people’s indentities were unknown. The police and researchers had to search for DNA from relatives of the people to confirm their indentities. Read the texts. Answer the questions. The DNA detectives have helped identify criminals or relationships between people. How do the police use the DNA to find suspects and victims They compare the DNA information of the victim or suspect to the information in the database to find the suspect. Read the first text. Answer the questions. 2. How did the police find the killer 3. How long did it take the police to find the killer It took them 31 years. Firstly, they questioned several suspects. Then they found a full DNA profile of the killer from the victim’s body. They ran 12,000 male names through the database, and they were either witnesses or suspects. Finally, they found the killer whose daughter was arrested for a minor incident. 1. How did the identification of Copernicus begin 2. What did the expert find out about Copernicus In 2005, a skull and an incomplete skeleton were found in Frombork, Poland, where Copernicus was buried. Read the second text. Answer the questions. He had a broken nose, blue eyes, and a scar above his left eye. 3. How did the experts find genetic material from Copernicus 4. Why do some scientists say that the findings should not be announced so early They think the team should have looked more carefully for the DNA from Copernicus’s mother or her relatives to check the result. They found nine hairs in the book which he had owned for decades. Some people are opposed to using DNA detectives to identify criminals or relationships between people.
