UNIT6 DISASTER AND HOPE PRE-READING Pompeii Pompeii was an Ancient Roman city in Italy. It is believed that the city was founded in the 7th or 6th century BC. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD destroyed the city, killing its inhabitants and burying it under tons of ash. The site was lost for centuries before its ruins were discovered in the late 16th century and broader rediscovery in the mid-18th century. Today Pompeii has UNESCO World Heritage Site status and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy, attracting millions of visitors each year.
