Whilst reading a biography, it’s a good idea to make a timeline to record and track important information, such as dates, places and key events. This can be a useful way of displaying the kind of life the person led and even, sometimes, what he / she was really like. Pre-reading Background Information Pre-reading Background Information Sir Nicholas Winton Sir Nicholas Winton (1909-2015) was born in London. On the eve of World War II, he was just a broker at the London Stock Exchange, but he single-handedly established an organisation to aid children from Jewish families at risk from the Nazis and managed to rescue 669 children from Czechoslovakia. Then he found them homes in Britain to help them escape the massacre. The Pre-reading Background Information Sir Nicholas Winton secret was kept for half a century until his wife found his journal when a television programme episode made by BBC was broadcast in 1988, and only then did his rescue achievements finally become known to the world. The British press called him the “British Oskar Schindler” and the children he rescued, “Winton’s children”. Pre-reading Background Information Oskar Schindler Oskar Schindler (1908-1974) was a German businessman, who is praised for saving the lives of approximately 1,100 Jews during World War II by employing them in his factories. He is respected by Jews and people who desire justice and equality all over the world. The world-famous film Schindler’s List, directed by Steven Spielberg, was based on Oskar Schindler’s story.
