The story is told by Gulliver himself and every journey he makes ends with his ship being destroyed or attacked by pirates (海盗) . Each time this happens Gulliver finds himself in a strange land with even stranger people. From the tiny Lilliputians to the enormous (巨大的) Brobdingnagians. From the strange Laputians on their island in the sky to the intelligent speaking horses, the Houyhnhnms. Many times Gulliver is in danger and risks his life, but luckily he is always saved. Gulliver’s Travels was a success when it was first published. It is still popular today because both young readers and adults enjoy it. This is because it can be enjoyed on many different levels: as a young reader’s fantasy story about travel and adventure and also as a political satire (讽刺文学) for adults, criticizing governments and leaders. Gulliver’s Travels is obviously also a travel book and Gulliver is a great adventurer. He can never refuse the temptation to leave home and travel on the seas another time. All these ingredients make the book a classic which people are never tired of reading. At the end of the story Gulliver finally ends his travels but he is strongly changed by them. He learns that there are many different ideas of what makes a civilized society and that we must not feel superior (有优越感的) to others just because they are different from us.
