What activities are good or bad for your body What Is a Calorie What are calories Are they important A calorie is a measure of the energy you get from food. Some foods are high in calories, and other foods aren’t. Your body needs a certain number of calories to do all the things you do every day. But if you eat more calories than your body needs, you put on too much weight. Lots of activity and exercise burns a lot of calories. Very little activity or exercise doesn’t burn a lot of calories. Why is being active good for us It helps our hearts stay healthy. It makes our bones strong, and it creates muscles. Being active is really important for young and old people. Activities that use lots of energy are best. Dancing is really good for your body. Riding a bike and swimming are also good for your body. But watching TV or playing video games are bad for your health if you do them too much. That’s because you sit in the same place to do them. Food Labels They also tell you the nutritional value of the food. Food labels tell you how much energy is stored in the food. Food Labels Use the food labels from drinks, snacks and breakfast cereals to complete the questions on the worksheet. You need different amounts of energy depending on what you do each day. Your body transfers energy when it keeps you warm, moves food through your gut, breathes, thinks, moves and talks. Energy Requirements Energy Balance If a person takes in more energy than they need: The energy will be stored in the chemical bonds that hold together fat molecules. The mass of the person will increase. If a person takes in less energy than they need: The fat molecules will be broken down to release energy from the chemical bonds. The mass of the person will decrease. An adult should take in just the energy that they need for the activities that they do. Energy Balance Pick one person and use the Energy in Food Table to plan what they could eat over the day to take in just the energy that they need.
