Weighing nearly nineteen kilos, it measures 335cm by 122cm. Its design is like the finest silk-weaving designs from ancient China, but this cloth is neither Chinese nor ancient. Created from natural spider silk by Simon Peers and Nicholas Godley, this is the only large spider-silk cloth in the world. Spun gold The silk for this cloth was collected from female 'Golden orb' spiders in Madagascar, over a period of about four years. While seventy people collected spiders from the wild, twelve more drew off the silk filaments from each spider, and spun the filaments into threads. The filament from one spider can be as long as 25 metres, but a single thread for weaving consists of 96 filaments. Thus one spider produces no more than 26 centimetres of fine silk thread at a time. Spun gold Spider silk possesses unique qualities. Although it is five times stronger than steel, it stretches to almost half its length again before breaking. Scientists know that spider silk would have thousands of uses in medicine and engineering, if only they could farm it. The trouble is that spiders are impossible to farm, because they eat one another. Researchers have not yet succeeded in creating spider silk without spiders, but they expect to do so soon. Thank you!
