The city is full of lakes, rivers, and forests that need caring. Many people in Nagchu are working together to keep the city clean and safe. The local government supports these people and pays them to patrol (巡逻) lakes, rivers, and forests. Out of the city’s 505,400 people, over 90,000 work as ecological (生态的) protectors, with more than 14,000 focusing on water protection. Over the past few years, a growing number of young people have started taking part in protecting water, too. Tsega is one of the young protectors. He has been protecting the water for many years. His village Lothe sits very high in the mountains and is the home of the Jangchu Diruk Glacier (姜古迪如冰川), which is very important because it’s the main source (源头) of the Yangtze River — the longest river in China. Tsega and his fellow villagers understand the importance of keeping the water clean because it serves as drinking water for people and animals living nearby. In Lothe, over 300 caretakers help clean rivers, wetlands, and grasslands just like Tsega. Another caretaker, Sodrub, from Lhegan village in Nagchu, says their team patrols every week to pick up rubbish like plastic bottles around the lakes. They also advise tourists not to litter while traveling. In total, more than 2,700 patrol workers are working in the Three-River-Source National Park in Nagchu’s Drachen county.
