After graduation, she continued to work in the US and created music for projects like the animated series Love, Death & Robots. The film scoring process starts with the composer meeting the director to discuss the movie’s story, background and desired musical style. They also need to determine where music should be placed in the film. “Where music goes in a movie depends on what the director wants and the music’s purpose, such as building tension (紧张气氛) or showing a character’s emotions,” Chen said. After the meeting, the composer starts exploring sounds that fit the movie’s story and begins writing music on professional software. To make sure the music achieves its desired effect, it’s important to assign (分配) different musical parts to various instruments. “For example, the soft sound of woodwind instruments (木管乐器) creates calm and romantic feelings, while playing short, quick notes on string instruments (弦乐器) helps to build up a tense atmosphere (气氛),” Chen said. Besides putting together the right instruments, the composer must also make sure the music matches the movie’s story. It should speed up during exciting scenes and slow down for romantic moments. If a scene is made shorter during editing, the music must be changed to fit perfectly. After the music is written, it can be recorded with musicians. The recorded tracks are then mixed to balance (平衡) different instruments and sounds before the final delivery.
