It is China's 59th World Heritage Sit e. Celebrated as“the backbone(脊梁) of Beijing”,the Beijing Central Axis is 7.8 kilometers long. This title expresses the meaning of Beijing's Central Axis. It runs from north to south in central Beijing. It plays a key role in shaping how Beijing looks, with its many import ant buildings. Its history dates back to the Yuan Dynasty. People started building the Beijing Central Axis in the 13th century and f inished it in the 16th century. It shows the traditio nal Chinese ideas of“zhong” and“he”. It is a group of architectural and archaeological sites(考古遗 址), including palaces, gardens, and other building s. These buildings show the rich historical and cultural meaning of Bei jing. And they still play an important part in modern life. The idea of the Beijing Central Axis came from Kao gongji, written before 221 BC. In this book, the ways of capital city planning were rec orded.
