I worried about him more than the other farm cats because he would head off on his own and go exploring, even when he was too young to safely do so. He also seemed compelled to add a different twist to whatever activities his siblings were engaging in. If they were sunning themselves in front of the barn, he was sprawled on the window ledge of the chicken coop. I could never figure out how he could get up there when he was such a young kitten. When Momma Cat started to take the kittens a little farther from the barn, and they were learning to climb trees, Rusty decided that climbing my horse's tail was a lot more fun! Fortunately, my horse did not object to it, and she would stand quietly as he practised his climbing skills. When he reached his destination and sat on my horse's back and surveyed his kingdom, her tolerance and his determination made them quite the team. As Rusty became heavier, my horse wasn't quite as convinced that she needed a big cat hanging on her head. Whether it was coincidence or a well-thought-out plan between the two, they came up with a new strategy. She would walk over to the gate in her pasture, and Rusty would climb up the gate post and then leap to her back. One day, I was planning on going for a ride in the country. My horse was saddled, and we were ready to go. Then, I remembered that spraying myself with a bit of mosquito repellent might be a good idea. I tied my horse to the gate, and when I returned Rusty was sitting in the saddle. I put him on the ground, got on my horse, and headed down the lane. I turned around to make sure that all was well and could see him running along behind. I turned back and put Rusty in the barn. But he got out and followed us. Once again, I turned around and this time I locked him in the vacant chicken coop. It was screened, and I felt he would be safe there until I returned. I gave him food and water to distract him and assumed he would be happily sleeping when I returned. I made it down the lane and turned around to check. No Rusty. I was happily riding down the road, enjoying the wonderful smells and sounds of summer in the country. I saw a tra ... ...
