(课件网) Unit 3 Unit 3 Faster, higher, stronger To read the two points of view about winning. To have your own understanding about winning and think of arguments to support your point of view. To prepare for a debate. Work in groups. Read the two points of view about winning and take sides. Think of arguments to support your point of view and make notes. Point of view: Arguments: Supporting examples: It is your ability that counts. If I’m strong enough, I must win; or else, I think I can also enjoy the pleasure of taking part. Prepare for a debate. Consider the following: 1 the roles and responsibilities for each member of your group 2 your arguments, opening and summary 3 the opposing arguments you might face and how you can respond to them 4 useful words, expressions and structures Why do we say “It’s not to win but to take part that counts” It’s a phrase supported by the founder of the modern Olympics Games, Pierre de Coubertin, who said “The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle.” It’s not to win but to take part that counts Most people seem to agree that trying and failing is more admirable than not trying at all. In practice, though, most people seem only to be interested in the medals. Many people would say otherwise. They say that effort, determination and striving to reach a goal are worth praising in themselves. It is commonly accepted that through sport one learns to persevere, to sacrifice, to be self-disciplined, to work hard, to follow orders, to be a leader, and to work with others. Winning athletes are those who combine the good behaviors with natural talent. There are other goals to struggle for apart from a medal. Pierre de Coubertin himself coined the motto “Citius, Altius, fortius” (“Swifter, Higher, Stronger”) for his games. It is an ambiguous phrase, one that could be used to include managing to do something as well as going for gold. Competition is not unethical (不道德的). It is reasonable that winners be rewarded, even if their victories have an element of chance (and all victories have); this is the essence of a game, and games are fundamental to humanity. Celebrating achievement is not in itself unethical, but it can drive some competitors to unethical behavior. Team up with a group with the opposite point of view and hold the debate. Write a reflection after completing this unit. Consider the following: 1. What is your understanding of sporting spirit 2. What text types have you learnt about What are their features 3. What words, expressions and structures have you learnt 4. What improvement have you made in understanding different cultures 5. What improvement have you made in using learning strategies and exploring effective ways of learning 6. What improvement have you made in analysing and solving problems
