Xu Zhimo(1897—1931) was a twentieth-century Chinese poet.He was given the name of Zhangxu and the courtesy1 name of Yousen.He later changed his courtesy name to Zhimo. He is romanticised2 as pursuing love,freedom and beauty in all his life (from the words of Hu Shih). He promoted the form of modern Chinese poetry,and therefore made a great contribution to modern Chinese literature. In 1918,Xu Zhimo travelled to the United States to study economics3 at Columbia University in New York City.In 1921,he went to study at Cambridge University in England where he fell in love with English romantic poetry like that of Keats and Shelley.
