Read them aloud with the whole class. ( While the lights were changing to red, a car suddenly appeared round the corner. When Henry was trying to find the snake, his hand began to hurt badly. I was trying to pick it up when it bit me again. ) Step 2　Grammar summary Sum up the grammar together with the whole class. 过去进行时与when和while引导的时间状语从句连用 过去进行时常和when, while引导的时间状语连用，构成复合句。 My mother was cooking when I got home. 我母亲正在做饭，这时我到了家。 My father was watching TV while my mother was doing cleaning. (那时)我父亲在看电视，我母亲在清扫卫生。 一、when与while的区别 在when引导的时间状语从句中，谓语动词可以是延续性动词，也可以是非延续性动词。而在while引导的时间状语从句中，谓语动词必须是延续性动词。 We were talking when the teacher came in. 我们正在交谈，这时老师进来了。 They arrived when/while we were having dinner. 当我们正在吃晚饭时，他们到了。 二、when引导的时间状语从句与主句的时态 主句when从句过去进行时一般过去时一般过去时过去进行时 I was walking in the street when the accident happened. 我正在街上散步，这时这起交通事故发生了。 The accident happened when I was walking in the street. 当我正在街上散步时，这起事故发生了。 [总结] 能够延续的动词用过去进行时，不能延续的动词用一般过去时。 三、 while 引导的时间状语从句与主句的时态 主句while主句一般过去时过去进行时过去进行时过去进行时 I saw the accident while I was walking on the road. 当我正在街上散步时，我看见了这起事故。 My mother was watching TV while my father was reading newspapers. 我母亲在看电视时，我父亲在读报纸。 [总结] 当强调两个动作过去同时进行时，主句和while从句都用过去进行时。 四、归纳 如果主句和从句都用了过去进行时，那么从句用while引导；如果从句是一般过去时，要用when引导；如果主句是一般过去时，从句是过去进行时，从句可用when或while引导。 Step 3　Practice 1.
