Bamboo drifting has a history of over 2,000 years. It originated (起源于) in the Chishui River area of Guizhou province. During the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC), the Bozhou district of Zunyi city was known for its high-quality nanmu (优质楠木). It was needed by the royal (皇家的) family more than 2,000 kilometers to the north. There was no good transportation (交通工具) to move the heavy nanmu. So people took one log (原木) at a time up the Chishui River, standing on the log as it drifted. Later, people made drifting the wood a competition (比赛). In the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), bamboo replaced (替代) wood because it was cheaper.? Now, bamboo drifting has become a kind of folk (民间的) sport. People in Guizhou hold bamboo drifting competitions every year during Dragon Boat Festival. Master’s story At the age of 7, Yang Liu started to learn bamboo drifting from her grandmother. The 24-year-old has become an inheritor (传承人) of the skill.? Yang said the most difficult part of bamboo drifting is keeping one’s balance. “I fell in the water several times when I was practicing,” she told Yangtze Evening News. “Usually, the bamboo under your feet is about 9 meters long, and the bamboo in your hands is about 5 meters. If the bamboo is not long enough, it will not float (漂浮). You have to fight against the water by changing the angle (角度) you stand at on the bamboo to keep your balance.” But her love for the ancient skill keeps Yang going. In the past 17 years, she has drifted all year round, in cold winter and hot summer. Now, she is able to do “Chinese qinggong” on the water.? Yang tries to spread the culture of bamboo drifting through creative ways. She dances while she drifts. Since hanfu culture is popular these days, she wears hanfu while performing (表演).? In 2020, Yang started to post videos on social media platforms (社交媒体平台), including Douyin and Bilibili. “I want it to go abroad (走向国外) so that more people around the world will like Chinese culture,” she told China Daily.
