Unit 2 Making a difference Developing ideas 【教材分析】 In this period, the passage is intended to reflect the unit theme from another angle. Students will read a brief biography of Nicholas Winton, the British Schindler, who survived the World War II and made every effort to save 669 children’s lives from death at the hands of the Nazis. Students are expected to understand the reading material better by making a timeline to record and tract important information. In writing section, a model version presents Tu Youyou’s CV, which tells students about a great medical research pioneer’s experience. The writing frame will help students grasp the way of writing a short biography. 【教学目标】 1. Guide students to get the main information of the biography by skimming and scanning. 2. Guide students to further understand the text and think about Winton’s personal qualities, which is intended to help students comment on people’s moral values and develop a sense of social responsibility. 3. Lead student to master how to write a short biography with writing help. 【教学重难点】 1. Help students master the reading skills of biographies to understand the text better. 2. Lead students to think about personal qualities and talk about what you can learn from him. 3. Lead student to master how to write a short biography. 【教学过程】 Step 1 Pre-reading 1. Have students look at the word cloud and the pictures to predict what the text is mainly about. Notes: have some students read the words and expressions loudly so as to make sure they recognize the meanings of the words. 2. Lead students to read “Learning to learn”, which can help them quickly get the main idea of the text according to the timeline. Step 2 First reading 1. Read the text and check your prediction. 2. Decide if the following statements are True or False. ① During World War II, 669 Jewish children were saved with the help of Nicholas Winton. ② Nicholas Winton was born in Germany and later took British nationality. ③ Nicholas Winton served as a pilot in Britain’s Royal Air Force during World War II. ④ Nicholas Winton is respected for his bravery, kindness as well as wisdom. Step 3: Further reading 1. Have students fill in the form according to a timeline to display the life of Nicholas Winton. 2.
