Later, cuju was played in the army for training purpose during the Han Dynasty(朝代). Cuju, as the ancestor of football, has had many changes throughout China s history. During the Tang Dynasty, the original ball made out of two pieces of leather was replaced by an air-filled ball made out of 8 pieces of cuspate(尖的)leather, making the ball rounder and lighter. Then during the Song Dynasty, the manufacturing(制造)skill of the football further improved. The eight pieces of leather developed into 12 pieces of better leather, and the ball was more closely jointed together, fully round, and weighing about 500g. Moreover, at the time there were already 40 different kinds of varieties, and each had its strong points and flaws(缺点). Interesting facts about cuju: 1. Many emperors were cuju fans in ancient China. Throughout the country s long history, many emperors were big fans of cuju, such as Cao Cao, lord(统治者)of Wei during the Three Kingdoms Period, Liu Bang and Liu Che, emperors during the Han Dynasty. Among them was Zhao Ji, Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty. As a super fan, he set a rule that every year on his birthday, cuju games would be held for him. 2. Women were also good cuju players in ancient times. The earliest record of women cuju players can be traced back to the Han Dynasty.
