Today it is sold in 1,000 stores, and he’s about to launch it in Europe. “When I was 14, my grandma told me her secret recipe for jam. I made a batch and sold it locally for $3.00 a jar. It was really popular, and within 18 months I was making 1,000 jars a week. My story attracted a businessman’s attention. Thanks to his advice, I began researching jam companies and I developed the products and called it SuperJam. Today I make more money than both my parents combined.* People ask if I feel I’ve missed too much as a normal teenager, but I still do all the things with my friends that the average teenager does—I just get to do unusual stuff as well, like having dinner with famous businessmen. My ambition is to sell my jam worldwide.” Lisa James As she’s doing business studies, it may not be surprising that Lisa James has set up her own company, but it has happened on a much greater scale than she thought. The idea for Carefree Flowers came from a visit to a friend in hospital. Real flowers were not allowed, so instead, Lisa created an arrangement of origami paper ones and each of them contains a special message. Before long, Lisa and her mother, Maria, had set up Carefree Flowers to meet the demand. Lisa deals with the marketing and design. “Mum does the rest, so I can do my coursework.” She’s also good at managing her time. “It’s something I got used to at school—I played basketball and had to fit it around schoolwork.” Lisa plans to continue developing the business and make it big before she starts another one.
