Origin: It began in ancient times as both a harvest festival and a way to honour the moon. The story of Chang’e is often linked to the celebration of this festival. Meaning: The full moon is a symbol for family reunion, which is why that day is also known as the Festival of Reunion. Activities: Eating mooncakes Mooncake is the most traditional and important food of the festival. The deliciously filled cake is round in shape like the full moon, which is a symbol of prosperity and family reunion. Admiring the full moon Traditionally, on Mid-Autumn Day, Chinese family members and friends will get together to admire the bright mid-autumn moon. 文化知识———中秋节小知识 Similar festivals in Asia In Vietnam, the Mid-Autumn Festival is a big day for children in the country as they can enjoy all kinds of mooncakes, watch beautiful lanterns and a variety of toys. In Japan, it is known as Tsukimi, or the Moon Viewing Festival. Origin: During the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 24), more than 2,000 years ago, Emperor Wen ordered that the 15th day of the first lunar month be dedicated to the Lantern Festival. Activities: Appreciating the beauty of lanterns: It is a tradition that people hang lanterns everywhere. People will come out and appreciate the beautiful scene. Guessing lantern riddles: Riddles written on the lanterns can inspire wisdom and cater to the festival atmosphere, so many people like the activity very much.
