After high school, he was a journalist before enlisting as an ambulance driver in the First World War. He was seriously wounded and returned home in 1918. His experiences of war formed his novel, A Farewell to Arms (1929). His first novel, The Sun Also Rises, was published in 1926. He was later a journalist during the Spanish Civil War, writing For Whom the Bell Tolls based on his experience. The Old Man and the Sea was published in 1952. Hemingway won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for it in 1953, and also won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. His works are considered classic of American literature.
