The ears of the African elephant are bigger than those of the Asian elephant. African elephants also have two “fingers” at the end of their trunks, while Asian elephants only have one. An elephant’s pregnancy lasts about 22 months. Usually, only one baby is born at a time, and the whole herd (兽群) helps take care of it. Elephants have excellent memory. Elephants usually live in groups led by the oldest female, called the matriarch. Elephants’ long tusks are used to strip bark from trees, dig for food, and sometimes fight with other elephants. They use them to drink, breathe, grab food, and communicate with others. Elephants in Thailand Elephants have a deep connection (联系) with the culture and history of Thailand. There used to be an elephant on the old flag of the country, and they still appear on the flags of some provinces and on naval and diplomatic flags (海军和外交旗帜). As well as symbolizing (象征) good luck, they also represent the traits of strength, loyalty, and longevity(长寿). In the past, elephants were used as work animals and even in battles (战争). Even worse, they were hunted and killed for their ivory. But today people realize the importance of protecting them. There are many elephant sanctuaries (保护区) in the country which aim to protect the animals. Many other countries have symbolic animals, which represent the country and important aspects of the culture, such as the eagle for the United States, and the bull for Spain.
