Nothing can be done without norms or standards.—Mencius 不以规矩,不能成方圆。———孟子 Good order is the foundation of all things. —Edmund Burke n. 基础 PS: Edmund Burke was an 18th-century Irish-British politician and philosopher, known as the father of modern conservatism(保守主义). 2 1 What do these quotes mean 2 Which one do you agree with more Why Both quotes highlight the importance of rules and order. Mencius says rules (like tools for drawing) are needed to do things right. Burke argues good order is the base for everything to work well. They tell us rules/order help individuals and society function. I agree more with Mencius. His metaphor (using tools to draw) is easy to get. It shows rules are practical “tools” for success. Like, traffic rules (norms) help us drive safely. So his quote connects well with daily life. Homework Review the reading after class. Search online for more information about rules.
