Talk about “What is your favourite colour?” 2. Show a picture of a yellow coat and say, “The rulers in ancient Chinaliked wearing yellow.” Show the sentences and lead in the object clauses. We know that it is a yellow coat. I hear that the rulers in ancientChina like to wear yellow. Step 2 Grammar A 1. Give them some explanations about object clausesintroduced by that. T:An object clause functions as the object of a sentence. We use that to introduce an object clause that is a statement. An object clause can be put after verbs such as say, find, know, think, believe, hope, noticeand mean. Some people believe that colours can influence our moods. She hopes that yellow can bring her success. An object clause can also follow adjectives such as certain, sure and glad. He is glad that the walls in his room are blue. She is sure that yellow can bring her good luck. In informal English we often drop that,because it has no meanings. I think (that) blue is better than pink. Do you think (that) your favourite colour matches your characteristics? 2. Talk about room colours. Read the dialogue and add that to each object clause. Answers: 3. Translation. (1)她知道Timmy是一个好学生。 (2)他爸爸说他最喜欢的颜色是红色。 (3)我们意识到我们要努力工作。 Answers: (1) She knows (that) Timmy is a good student. (2) His father said (that) his favourite colour is red. (3) We realize (that) we should work hard. Step 3 Grammar B 1. Give them some explanations about object clauses introduced by if or whether. An object clause functions as the object of a sentence. We use if/whether to introduce an object clause that expresses a yes/no question. An object clause can be put after verbs such as ask, see, wonder, think, and find out. The word order in the clause should be the same as object clauses introduced by that. You may wonder if/whether colours influence our moods. Sandy asks if/whether orange can cheer her up. 2. Talk about the differences betweenif and whether. I am interested in whether he’ll go to have a picnic. Whether this is true or not, I am not sure.
