Information About Halloween: Date:_____ Symbols:_____ _____ Activities:_____ _____ _____ Feelings:_____ October 31st pumpkin lanterns,spiders and webs, ghost, skeletons, bats, black cat, candies, constumes... decorate houses to make it scary, hold costume parties, have community gatherings, ask for candies(trick or treat) , play games... happiness, laughter, enjoyment Now look at the following three pictures and describe them. The children dress up as ghosts,skeletons(骷髅),and witches(女巫). They are showing off their costumes(服装). Children in their costumes receive treats from a lady. These may be the candies for children who say “trick or treat” . Supplementary Material(P9-P13) The Origin of Halloween Halloween is said to originate from the Celtic festival(凯尔特节) called *Samhain(萨温节). It was celebrated at the end of the harvest season and people would light bonfires (篝火) and don(穿上) costumes to scare off ghosts that were said to roam(漫游) the lands. . Some of these traditions were later incorporated(被纳入) into All Saints’ Day(万圣节), celebrated on Novermber 1. The evening before , October 31, was known as All Hallows’ Evening(also known as All Hallows’ Eve), which was then shortened(被缩短) to Halloween. Customs of Halloween As time progressed, this festival became more secular (世俗的:with no connection to religion) and tended to revolve around children’s activities like trick-or-treat. Customs of Halloween In the past, children used to dress up as characters that were associated with the supernatural(超自然的), like skeletons(骷髅), goblins(小妖精), witches(女巫), and warlocks(术士).
